Welcome to the Strangford Lough Book website
Strangford Lough is a spectacular sea lough, studded with islands and boasting mile upon mile of hidden coves, sandy beaches, rocky outcrops and sheltered inlets. With its picturesque villages, rare wildlife and breathtaking views of the Mourne mountains, the lough is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a hugely popular attraction for visitors from all over the world.
Photographer Alain Le Garsmeur, who has made his home in the area, has photographed the lough over the course of an entire year. In more than 160 full-colour photographs, he captures the beauty of the lough as it changes from season to season, from the arrival of the Brent geese in the autumn to the swelling ranks of sailing boats which take to the water in the warm summer months.
Accompanied by Ian Hill’s lively commentary, these stunning photographs tell the fascinating story of Strangford Lough, highlighting its unique built heritage, its importance as a natural habitat and its unparalleled beauty. From the scenic charm of villages such as Portaferry, Killyleagh and Strangford to historic landmarks including Scrabo Tower, Castle Ward and Mount Stewart, this book creates a unique portrait of the lough and is a rich celebration of one of the best-loved parts of Ireland.
